[INTERVIEW] @star1: ‘Tip-toe boy’ Park Sungwoo, “(I am) thankful for being tip-toe boy”
“I have found tip-toe boy’s name”, this was the sentence found on SNS before the broadcast of Mnet ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ which gave birth to this trainee. Throughout the program, the handsome face and utmost performance of ‘tip-toe boy’, Park Sungwoo (30) received so much attention. Actually, he was better seeing him personally than on screen. Hoo, I don’t want to feel weak. However, the entertainment business is like a marrow which you can steadily knock on. “Having to start at a late age is a challenge which is not easy for me, but I think now is the chance”, he said as his eyes sparkle. I met Park Sungwoo, who’s deadlier as you know and more charming as you see.
Q: ‘Produce 101’ is finished. What are you doing now?
A: My late age is really a challenge but I am doing my best. I felt as I work hard, I tend to feel less exhausted. I am catching my breath while watching the drama I’ve wanted to watch. SBS ‘Band of Sisters’ is fun.
Q: Those who turned idols on their 30’s isn’t few. For sure, you’ve gain motivation from their support.
A: I have auditioned before and received some acting lessons. I decided to work full-time on the entertainment industry when I was about 24 years old. I worked as an assistant in a part-time job but I am so happy as I just pass by the camera. Since then, I decided I want to live through entertainment industry. I want to do these things but obviously I can’t do all what I wanted (laughs). So, I participate on every chance that comes and I also wanted to have that chance so I volunteer.
Q: How was it seeing BoA and the trainers for the first time?
A: It was fascinating seeing these famous people. The tension was felt on the first stage but everyone still has their extraordinary poses held down. In real life, it was beautiful and cool (laughs). Every single question of BoA-nim was so keen which made me very nervous.
Q: What question do you feel is the sharpest?
A: Uhm… First, is when they want to know my age and I’m somehow trilled to say ‘thirty’. I wonder if I’m standing there or not (laughs). From the very first question I heard, I said to myself “Can you do it? You can do it.” Still, Kahi-teacher gave me a lot of energy.
Q: Since before the program starts, you were famous as tiptoe boy. How was the tiptoe fancam filmed?
A: We had this time here we, the 101 boys, will reveal ourselves to the national producers for the first time. The security guards told me to go at the back where the tall people are for safety measures, and as I go to the back, I’m very worried that my face won’t be seen even once. I want them to see my face even a little so I tiptoed. My dispirited heart looked at the side and accidentally saw her filming me with her phone. The situation is somewhat embarrassing and happy too so I awkwardly laughed. I was then worried with being put in the back, but then it became a blessing in disguise.
Q: You have received a lot of assistance from Im Youngmin in ‘Be Mine’ and from Noh Taehyun in ‘Shape of You’.
A: ‘Be Mine’ was the first stage and I was very late in familiarizing the choreography. Youngmin was the one who knew the choreography the most and he had a lot of trouble in teaching others as well. Taehyun was the one who lead and composed (the dance) for ‘Shape of You’ and it was very difficult for him but he took care of it well that’s why I’m so sorry and thankful at the same time to him.
Q: The broadcast was also famous for its evil-editing.
A: The reality is that the 101 people can’t even shine on the screen. In fact, if 101 people would be given 1 minute each, that would only be just 101 minutes in total. I think it would be more fun if it was filled with a lot of parts showing the trainees different charms.
Q: Amidst of the tiring preparations, what are the fun moments you had?
A: In ‘Shape of You’, I was falling behind but Donghan was there to continuously help me and I really appreciate that. I remember the moment when Donghan is pleading to buy a ramen and we secretly shared on it. I felt riding a roller coaster repeatedly throughout the program because of the pleasant moments and at the same time, tiring ones.
Q: It is so sad you missed the ‘Open Up’ stage.
A: It is a short period time but the stage grew on me. As I saw the member structure in ‘Open Up’, I knew already why it was chosen for me. I think if I had the chance to perform it, I think I could have done better than before even though I’m not perfect.
Q: What did you get in ‘Produce 101 Season 2’?
A: Many people recognized it. I received various experiences and stimulation. I think the best and happiest thing I have were the fans that cheered and supported me.
Q: It all began with the ‘tiptoe’ fancam. What do you want to say to the fan that filmed it?
A: Thank you very much. Thanks to it, I was once seen in the program and received love even though I am lacking skills. From now on, I will work hard on my activities to repay my being ‘tiptoe’ as much as possible (laughs).
Q: Any future plans?
A: The schedule is being worked out. I am also regularly taking acting lessons. It is not that easy to get opportunities but I think it is my job to have them. I wasn’t to show to everyone the various Park Sungwoo in various ways.
